Change, Not Charity

Giving Done Right: Change, Not Charity

October is “giving campaign month” at our work and is truly a momentous occasion every year with teams rallying to drive up participation in charitable giving (matched by the company) and participation in volunteering (the company pays the organization $25 per hour for every volunteer hour). It’s honestly one of the best things about our company and a tradition that has held steady for my entire twenty-five year career (and counting!).

So this month we thought we’d try to find a podcast related to charitable donations, and this one also features Jacqueline Martinez Garcel, the CEO of the Latino Community Foundation (LCF) - which we thought was a perfect way to also recognize Hispanic Heritage Month. We hope you’ll enjoy it as well.

Suggested discussion questions (if you need something to start the conversation):

  • Does your place of work offer any sort of charitable donation matching? Or encourage volunteering or other ways to give back to the community?

  • Thoughts on effectiveness of the “mega” charities vs. local, smaller organizations? Have you ever debated giving to one and not the other?

  • Are there any charities that you donate to regularly, or sponsor in a deeper way (volunteer for, sit on the board, etc) - can you share why? And what change you’ve seen that’s inspired you?
