Sometimes Invisibility Isn’t A Superpower

Sometimes Invisibility Isn’t A Superpower

I picked this podcast today because it just seemed so relatable. Something that could happen right down the hallway at any given workplace. Something that almost assuredly has happened at your workplace and at mine. Something that keeps too many people from truly bringing their authentic selves to the office.

I also felt like it was a great opportunity to re-highlight a fabulous series. Battle Tactics For Your Sexist Workplace was one of the early series that we listened to in the club and they’ve recently been putting out great, fresh new content. I hope you’ll get excited about that and check out more of the series (and even consider supporting them).

And I also liked the connection to the mental health episode we listened to last month. In today’s story the impacted individual embraced therapy as one tool to help her deal with the situation… and l think that’s great. Like last months episode - we need to do more to destigmatize therapy and mental health both in the workplace and just broadly in our culture.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!

Suggested discussion questions (if you need something to start the conversation):

  • Have you ever experienced feedback that felt like it stifled your ability to bring your authentic self to work?

  • What should the role of HR be in a situation like this? In this story do you think they did enough or too little? How do you think this would play out with HR at your workplace?

  • What does having a “safe space” mean to you? What are the core constructs needed to create such a space?

  • If you’re a manager what takeaways do you have from this episode?
