What Makes Us Asian?
Episode 218: Chicken Feet, Plastic Bag Drawers, & Paris Baguette - What Makes Us Asian? #AAPIHM
This month Anna and I wanted to find an episode to help honor and celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and came across this wonderfully funny but also poignant podcast from a wonderful series called AsianBossGirl. Hosted by Melody Cheng, Helen Wu-Wang, and Janet Wang this is a series full of personality, thoughtfulness, freshness, and humor.
This particular episode puts a very personal lens on what it means to be Asian especially growing up here in the United States. It’s different for every individual but perhaps you can relate? Even if you’re not of Asian heritage, we found a lot of anecdotes that we think anyone with parents and grandparents can relate to. We all come from somewhere.
Suggested discussion questions (if you need something to start the conversation):
What are some of the traditions from your family upbringing that influenced who you are today?
Do you find yourself understanding traditions differently later in life? Are you carrying on some of those traditions? Or bringing them back perhaps?
“It’s OK to be proud of your culture”
Do you ever catch yourself “turning into your parents”?
