A conversation with Maria Hinojosa

With National Hispanic Heritage Month in mind we introduce a new series to our club – a fabulous Peabody Award winning show called Latino USA

In this particular episode we’ll listen to a recent interview with Maria Hinojosa around the launch of her new book, “Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America.” Maria is an Emmy award-winning journalist and longtime host of Latino USA, so it’s exciting and eye opening to hear her tell her own story. But enough from me, better to hear it from Maria in her own words.

Suggested discussion questions (if you need something to start the conversation):

  • Maria talks about several tenuous moments in her life - if you were friends with Maria or if someone in your life was going through similar moments - what are some ways that you might be an ally?

  • Maria talks about the fact Spanish as a language arrived in North America before English. As you think about the history of the country or the place where you are from, are there other perspectives on history that are less heard? What value might be gained from exploring history from different perspectives?

  • What are some ways you might celebrate and bring awareness to Hispanic and Latinx culture in your place of work, school, or community?
