Screams and Silence
The Anti Asian Violence That Came Before The Atlanta Shooting : Code Switch : NPR
This month it seemed incredibly important to recognize, process, and understand how we might be better allies for our Asian co-workers, family, and friends.
We’ve listened to Code Switch several times before, so it’s not a new series, but it’s one that consistently touches on topics worth understanding as allies.
In this episode we hear about how organizers and influencers have been trying to raise alarm bells over anti-Asian hate and racism for much of the last year… only to finally get the media spotlight in wake of the horrific, recent, deadly shootings in Georgia.
Suggested discussion questions (if you need something to start the conversation):
Many say hate is infectious. We had recent US administrations that many people categorized as hateful. Do you think this has impacted recent hate crimes towards Asian Americans?
Those that don’t learn from their history are bound to repeat it. How does history play into modern day? Does the “white washing” of history help to continue cycles of hate?
Have you ever felt not heard? How did it feel? How do you think this might feel to an entire culture/people/group?
